Constantine I of Greece

Constantine was born on August 2, 1868, in Athens, Greece, as the heir apparent to the Greek throne. As the eldest son of King George I of Greece, he was raised with the expectation that he would one day rule the nation. His upbringing prepared him for the responsibilities of kingship during a period when Greece was still establishing itself as a modern European state. The royal family provided him with the education and training necessary for his future role as monarch.

Constantine's journey to kingship was marked by tragedy when his father, King George I, was assassinated in 1913. The assassination thrust Constantine into the role of monarch at a critical time in Greek history. He officially became King of Greece on March 18, 1913, inheriting a nation facing numerous internal and external challenges. His succession marked the beginning of what would become one of the most turbulent periods in Greek royal history.

Constantine's first reign lasted from March 18, 1913, until June 11, 1917, spanning just over four years. During this period, he faced the immense challenge of leading Greece through World War I and its aftermath. His reign was complicated by political divisions within Greece and disagreements over the country's involvement in the global conflict. These tensions ultimately led to his first abdication in 1917, forcing him to leave the throne temporarily.

After three years away from the throne, Constantine returned to power on December 19, 1920, beginning his second reign as King of Greece. His restoration came during a period of continued political instability and ongoing conflicts in the region. However, this second reign proved to be even shorter than his first, lasting less than two years. The challenges that had plagued his first reign continued to mount during this period, creating additional pressures on his leadership.

Constantine's second reign ended on September 27, 1922, when he was forced to abdicate for the second and final time. Following his abdication, he went into exile, leaving Greece behind as political circumstances made his continued presence impossible. He spent his final months in Palermo, Italy, far from the country he had twice ruled. Constantine died on January 11, 1923, in Palermo, bringing to an end a life that had been defined by the tumultuous politics of early 20th-century Greece.

Constantine I's reign represents a critical period in Greek history when the monarchy faced unprecedented challenges from both domestic political forces and international conflicts.
