The Young Officer

As a young officer, Thiệu's cautious yet effective strategic mind became apparent. He trained in France and the United States, studying at institutions like the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. In 1956, he took command of the National Military Academy in Đà Lạt, where he forged crucial relationships with many future generals. This posting allowed him to cultivate loyalty among a generation of officers who would later support his rise to power.

His military acumen was tested in 1960 when he rallied his 7th Division from Biên Hòa to help quell a coup attempt against President Ngô Đình Diệm. His swift action helped save the besieged president, though it didn't prevent Diệm's eventual downfall.

Navigating the Coups

Thiệu eventually turned against Diệm, playing a critical role in the November 1963 coup. He led his 5th Division in the final assault on Gia Long Palace, pushing through the night as tanks and artillery pounded the defenses. The palace fell the next morning. Thiệu was made a general by the new junta. In the chaotic years that followed Diệm's assassination, South Vietnam was plagued by a series of short-lived military governments. Thiệu, known for his cautious approach, quietly ascended through the ranks, often watching as rivals sidelined themselves. He emerged as the nominal head of state in 1965, a period that brought some stability to the volatile nation.

President During Wartime

In 1967, Thiệu ran for president, with Air Marshal Nguyễn Cao Kỳ as his running mate, despite their rivalry for the top position. After a power struggle, Thiệu ultimately won, though the election was marked by accusations of rigging. He consolidated power, notably restricting eligibility for the 1971 election, which he then won uncontested. While his regime faced accusations of corruption and authoritarian tendencies, it also championed liberal ideas and allowed a vibrant civil society and press at times.

He fiercely opposed the Paris Peace Accords in 1973, believing they would undermine South Vietnam. When American forces withdrew, South Vietnam resisted the North Vietnamese for two more years. During the final communist offensive, his leadership faltered. He issued contradictory orders to his commanders, including General Ngô Quang Trưởng, leading to mass panic and a collapse of defenses in the south. This allowed the North Vietnamese army to gain irreversible momentum, rapidly approaching Saigon.

In the face of imminent defeat, Thiệu resigned and left the country, relocating first to Taipei and later settling quietly near Boston, Massachusetts. He chose a life out of the public eye, preferring not to engage with the media. He passed away on September 29, 2001, a figure forever tied to the tumultuous end of the Vietnam War.
