Born in Mount Vernon, New York, on December 18, 1970, Earl Simmons' early life was marked by hardship. He experienced physical violence from his mother and spent time in a group home after being expelled from middle school. By age fifteen, he was living on the streets of Yonkers, befriending stray dogs and turning to petty theft to survive. These early struggles, including a prison sentence for carjacking, became the wellspring of his powerful lyrics.

It was within the confines of prison walls that DMX truly dedicated himself to writing. He crafted his "Spellbound" style, spelling out words letter by letter, and began to battle other inmates. These experiences shaped a rapping style that was aggressive and intense, yet deeply personal, capable of expressing both the harsh realities of street life and the profound pain of childhood trauma.

After an unsuccessful early record deal, a friend, Irv Gotti, helped secure his signing to Def Jam Recordings in 1997. The buzz grew quickly, fueled by guest appearances on tracks like LL Cool J's "4, 3, 2, 1." His debut album, It's Dark and Hell Is Hot, dropped in May 1998, selling over a quarter-million copies in its first week and featuring the iconic "Ruff Ryders' Anthem." Just seven months later, Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood also debuted at number one. This made DMX the only rapper at the time to achieve two consecutive number-one albums within a single year.

His dominance continued with ...And Then There Was X in 1999, which spawned the Grammy-nominated hit "Party Up (Up in Here)." DMX cemented his place in history by becoming the first artist to have his first five albums consecutively debut atop the Billboard 200, including 2001's The Great Depression and 2003's Grand Champ, which featured "X Gon' Give It to Ya." Beyond music, he also graced the silver screen, appearing in films such as Romeo Must Die and Cradle 2 the Grave alongside Jet Li.

In later years, DMX openly discussed his spiritual journey, even expressing a desire to preach and recording a gospel album. Despite personal and legal challenges, his passion for music never waned. He reunited with Def Jam Recordings in 2019, bringing his journey full circle with the label that launched his career. Though he passed away on April 9, 2021, his spirit lived on in his posthumous album, Exodus, released later that year.
