Lister transitioned from the athletic field to the acting world, quickly becoming known for playing the 'heavy' or 'big bully.' His role as Deebo, the neighborhood enforcer in the 1995 film Friday and its 2000 sequel, catapulted him into cult classic status. He created a character so distinctive that he became instantly recognizable, often eliciting playful fear from fans who understood the gentle giant beneath the tough exterior. His face also appeared in several music videos, including Chamillionaire's hit “Ridin’.”

Yet, Lister’s range extended beyond just the intimidating presence. He could be found in vastly different cinematic landscapes, from portraying President Lindberg in the sci-fi epic The Fifth Element to a surprising voice role as the diminutive fennec fox, Finnick, in Disney’s animated hit Zootopia. These diverse roles showcased his versatility and the unexpected depth he brought to characters.

Before his most famous film roles, Lister also ventured into professional wrestling, bringing his formidable screen persona into the ring. As Zeus, "The Human Wrecking Machine," he famously feuded with Hulk Hogan in the World Wrestling Federation after appearing together in the 1989 film No Holds Barred. He would later return to wrestling as Z-Gangsta in World Championship Wrestling, proving he was always ready to embody a character with full commitment, whether on a film set or in a wrestling arena.

Despite the tough guy roles, Lister had a reputation for kindness and an infectious sense of humor. He was married to Felicia Forbes in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2003, and they had a daughter. Even when facing legal issues related to mortgage fraud later in life, he expressed a profound belief in forgiveness, stating, “What’s so cool about God and our government is that you can make a mistake and they will forgive you if you just a good person and doing right.”

Tommy Lister Jr. passed away on December 10, 2020, at the age of 62, after a period of illness. His death, caused by hypertension and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, left a void in the hearts of his colleagues and fans. Ice Cube’s simple farewell speaks volumes: “Thank you for being a good dude at heart. I miss you already.”
