A Vision in Three Colors
Prokudin-Gorskii’s method was painstaking but brilliant. Using red, green, and blue filters, he would take three separate black-and-white images of a single scene. These negatives, when projected through colored light or digitally combined today, burst forth in astonishing, true-to-life color. His skill brought him acclaim, especially after his vibrant color portrait of Leo Tolstoy became widely reproduced on postcards and prints.
This fame brought him an invitation to show his work to the Tsar's family. In 1909, Tsar Nicholas II was so impressed by the demonstration that he granted Prokudin-Gorskii the permission and funding for an extraordinary undertaking: to document the entire Russian Empire in color. This was to be his life's work. A collection of 10,000 photos would illustrate the diverse peoples, cultures, and natural wonders of the era.

Journey Across an Empire
For years, Prokudin-Gorskii traveled tirelessly, often using that railway-car darkroom as his mobile base. From bustling cities to serene rural settlements, he captured everything. His camera recorded the faces of ordinary people, ancient monasteries, burgeoning industries, and natural wonders, freezing moments in time that would otherwise be lost to history. This grand tour, conducted between 1909 and 1915, resulted in an unparalleled visual archive.
The outbreak of the October Revolution, however, dramatically altered his path. By 1918, he was ordered to procure projection equipment in Norway, a directive that led him into exile. He continued his scientific pursuits in color photography, securing patents in Germany, England, France, and Italy. In 1922, he finally settled in Paris, reuniting with his family and establishing a photo studio named Elka with his children.

A Timeless Archive
Even in his later years, well into the 1930s, Prokudin-Gorskii continued to share his images, lecturing young Russians in France about the country he had so meticulously documented. He passed away in Paris in 1944, a month after the city's liberation. He was laid to rest in the Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois Russian Cemetery. But his story didn't end there.
Decades after his death, most of his negatives found a new home in the US Library of Congress. Beginning in 2000, these precious historical artifacts were digitized. The three separate images for each subject were digitally combined, bringing hundreds of high-quality, full-color images of early 20th-century Russia back to life. These vivid photographs now allow us to gaze upon a world over a century old. We see it through the eyes of a true visionary.
