A Global Beginning
Born in Wesel, Germany, in 1893, young Ribbentrop’s early years were marked by mobility and a knack for languages. He became fluent in both French and English, thanks to courses at Lycée Fabert in Metz and time spent living in Grenoble and London. His adventurous spirit led him to Canada in 1910, where he took on varied roles, from working at Molsons Bank in Montreal to helping with the Quebec Bridge reconstruction. He even set up a small business importing German wine and champagne to Ottawa. When the First World War broke out, he returned to Germany, served on both the Eastern and Western Fronts, earning an Iron Cross.
After the war, a significant turn came with his marriage to Anna Elisabeth Henkell, daughter of a wealthy wine producer. This connection, along with his later adoption by an aunt, Gertrud von Ribbentrop, allowed him to add the aristocratic "von" to his name. He was introduced to Hitler in 1928, described as a businessman who could command a premium price for German champagne. Joining the Nazi Party in 1932, Ribbentrop quickly sought to position himself as a bridge between the emerging Nazi power and the existing political establishment, eventually hosting the pivotal meeting at his home.

Hitler's Ear, Europe's Fate
Ribbentrop became an increasingly central figure in Hitler's inner circle, often to the bewilderment of other party members who considered him superficial. He cultivated his influence by echoing Hitler's most radical ideas, often exaggerating them, which Hitler reportedly appreciated as requiring less effort from himself. This approach made Ribbentrop Hitler's favored foreign policy advisor, largely due to his familiarity with the world outside Germany and his unwavering sycophancy.
Appointed Special Commissioner for Disarmament in 1934, Ribbentrop's task was to present Germany as peace-loving while secretly advancing rearmament. He founded the *Dienststelle Ribbentrop*, an alternative foreign ministry, which allowed him to conduct diplomacy outside traditional channels. He played a crucial part in the lead-up to World War II, most notably in brokering the *Pact of Steel* with Fascist Italy and the infamous *Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact*, the non-aggression agreement with the Soviet Union that briefly aligned Germany and the USSR. He even opposed the invasion of the Soviet Union, favoring continued good relations. However, as the war progressed, his influence waned, particularly after 1941.

The Final Reckoning
In the aftermath of the war, Joachim von Ribbentrop was arrested in June 1945. He faced judgment at the Nuremberg trials, convicted for his role in initiating World War II and for enabling the atrocities of the Holocaust. On October 16, 1946, he was the first of the Nuremberg defendants to be executed, ending a life that began in Prussian Wesel and concluded in infamy, forever intertwined with one of history's darkest chapters.
