Susumu Tonegawa (September 5, 1939 – July 11, 2026) was a Japanese biologist and neuroscientist. He received the Nobel Prize in 1987 for discovering V(D)J recombination, the genetic basis of antibody diversity. Later, he pioneered research into memory formation, identifying and manipulating memory engram cells.
