This policy explains what information we collect when you use whowasthisguy, how we use it, and the rights you have over it. We have tried to write it in plain language. If anything is unclear, email us and we will explain.

1. What we collect

  • Account information. When you sign up we store your username, email address, and a hashed password. We never store passwords in plain text.
  • Memorial content. Text, photos, and metadata you upload to build a memorial or leave a condolence.
  • Usage data. Basic server logs, including IP address, browser, and the pages you viewed. We keep these for security and debugging and prune them regularly.
  • Cookies. A session cookie to keep you logged in. We do not use tracking cookies on family memorial pages.

2. How we use it

  • To let you create and manage memorials and condolences.
  • To keep the service secure and operational.
  • To communicate with you about your account, only when strictly necessary.
  • To serve relevant advertising on notable-lives pages (family memorials are ad-free).

3. What we never do

  • We do not sell your personal data.
  • We do not share content from private memorials with third parties.
  • We do not use your content to train commercial AI models.

4. Advertising

We display ads only on our notable-lives section. Ad partners receive standard request metadata (IP address, user agent, page URL) as part of normal web traffic, but they do not receive memorial content or account data.

5. Third parties we work with

We keep this list short:

  • Cloud infrastructure for hosting, storage, and CDN delivery.
  • An email provider for account emails.
  • A translation model provider for multilingual content.
  • An advertising network, used only on notable-lives pages.

6. Your rights

You can request a copy of the data we hold about you, correct it, or ask us to delete it. For memorials created on behalf of a family member, the family can request removal without any formal process.

7. Contacting us

Write to the address listed on our Imprint page. We reply to privacy requests within a reasonable time.
