Return Home and A Royal Approach
After the Netherlands was liberated in 1945, Juliana returned to assist with post-war relief. She served actively as president of the Dutch Red Cross, working with the National Reconstruction organization. Her unpretentious spirit, a stark contrast to traditional royal formality, quickly endeared her to the Dutch people. She often appeared in public dressed simply, preferring to be addressed as “Mevrouw” (Mrs.) rather than “Majesty,” and was known to ride her bicycle for fresh air.
When her mother, Queen Wilhelmina, abdicated in 1948, Juliana ascended to the throne, carrying this accessible style into her reign. She didn't merely attend prepared events; she made unannounced visits to social institutions and schools, insisting on seeing reality rather than a staged show. This genuine desire to connect with her citizens marked her as a queen truly of her people.

Challenges and Constitutional Change
Juliana's personal life, however, also presented profound challenges. During her pregnancy with her youngest daughter, Christina, she contracted rubella. Christina was born with significant vision impairment. Seeking every possible cure, Juliana fell under the influence of Greet Hofmans, a faith healer whose presence in the palace sparked national controversy. Despite the strain this placed on her marriage and the monarchy's public image, Juliana persevered, continuing her dedicated service to the nation.
Her reign, from 1948 to 1980, coincided with significant constitutional changes for the Netherlands. She signed the papers recognizing Indonesian sovereignty, marking the end of colonial rule. Later, she oversaw the reconstitution of the Netherlands Antilles and Suriname as equal constituent countries within the Kingdom, transforming the structure of the Dutch realm. These were moments of immense national adjustment, which she navigated with steady resolve.

A Legacy of Connection
In April 1980, Juliana abdicated in favor of her eldest daughter, Beatrix, just as her mother had done for her. She lived a long life, passing away in 2004 at the age of 94. Juliana of the Netherlands will be remembered for her unwavering commitment to her country, her resilience in the face of both personal and national crises, and above all, for her remarkable ability to connect with ordinary people, earning their affection and respect not through regal distance, but through an enduring, down-to-earth warmth.
