Hannibal Hamlin (August 27, 1809 – July 4, 1891) was an American lawyer and politician who served as the 15th Vice President of the United States under President Abraham Lincoln. A staunch abolitionist, he was the first Republican Vice President and a vocal advocate for the Emancipation Proclamation. He notably served in the Maine State Guard during the Civil War while holding office.
