Gnassingbé Eyadéma (December 26, 1935 – February 5, 2005) was a Togolese military officer and politician who served as President of Togo for nearly 38 years. He rose to power through military coups and maintained a single-party regime until the early 1990s, skillfully consolidating power to become Africa's longest-serving head of state. His rule was characterized by a distinctive personality cult and the immediate succession of his son upon his death.
