Building Tuskegee Institute

In 1881, at just 25, Washington was selected to lead the new Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute in Alabama. He took a room donated by a church and, with his students, literally built the school. They made bricks, constructed classrooms and dorms, and grew their own food. This hands-on approach was central to his philosophy, teaching practical skills alongside academics.

Tuskegee grew dramatically under his leadership. By his death in 1915, it boasted over 100 buildings and an endowment of around $2 million.
