Robert Strange McNamara (June 9, 1916 – July 6, 2009) was an American businessman and government official. He modernized Ford Motor Company as its president and served as Secretary of Defense during the Vietnam War. Later, as head of the World Bank, he shifted its focus to poverty reduction, publicly expressing regret for his wartime decisions.
