Many Huguenot leaders, including Admiral Gaspard de Coligny, gathered in Paris for the wedding in August 1572. Days after the ceremony, an attempt on Coligny's life escalated the already tense situation. In the early morning hours of August 24, the Duke of Guise murdered Coligny, and the streets of Paris erupted into a systematic slaughter of Huguenots.

Up to 10,000 Huguenots perished in Paris and the provinces over the next few weeks. Though historians debate Charles's direct orders, he certainly oversaw the tragic events, which profoundly haunted him. This single, devastating event reignited the religious wars with renewed ferocity.
