Richard Errett Smalley (June 6, 1943 – October 28, 2005) was an American chemist and professor at Rice University. He shared the 1996 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for discovering buckminsterfullerene, also known as buckyballs, a new form of carbon. Smalley was a dedicated advocate for nanotechnology and sustainable energy solutions throughout his life.
