Nicolaus Copernicus (February 28, 1473 – June 3, 1543) was a Polish mathematician and astronomer. He formulated the heliocentric model of the universe, placing the Sun at its center, which fundamentally challenged prevailing views. His seminal work, De revolutionibus orbium coelestium, published shortly before his death, ignited the Scientific Revolution.
