The Guitar Born from a 'Log'

It was in 1940, while working after-hours at the Epiphone factory in New York City, that Les Paul crafted his famous prototype: The Log. Frustrated by the feedback of hollow-body guitars, he sawed an Epiphone in half and inserted a four-by-four piece of Douglas fir in the middle, complete with a pickup. This simple yet audacious act addressed the persistent problems of feedback and lack of sustain. While Gibson initially dismissed his radical idea, the success of Fender's electric guitars prompted them to reconsider, leading to the launch of the iconic Gibson Les Paul in 1952. Paul continued to offer design suggestions for the instrument that bore his name, even after a brief separation from the brand in the 1960s.

Crafting New Sonic Worlds

Paul's inventive spirit extended far beyond the instrument itself, diving deep into the art of recording. His early experiments with sound on sound began in elementary school, punching holes in his mother’s player piano rolls. Later, in his Hollywood garage studio, he revolutionized multitrack recording. After a recording session, Bing Crosby himself encouraged Paul to build a studio to capture the unique sounds he envisioned.

Using a discarded Cadillac flywheel for a disc-cutter assembly, he layered guitar parts, recording some at half-speed for a double-fast effect when played back. His 1948 recording of Lover (When You're Near Me) featured eight different guitar parts, stunning the music industry with its richness. In 1949, when Crosby gifted him one of the first Ampex Model 200A tape recorders, Paul rapidly advanced his techniques, creating a second playback head to allow continuous overdubbing. This innovation allowed him to build entire sonic landscapes, making his recording techniques as vital to music production as any instrument.

The Unstoppable Musician

Even a devastating accident couldn't silence Les Paul's music. In 1948, a near-fatal car crash shattered his right arm and elbow. Doctors told him amputation was an option, but Paul insisted his arm be set at a 90-degree angle, allowing him to cradle and play his guitar. It took him a year and a half to recover, but he returned to playing, his determination unbroken. His trio, often featuring his wife Mary Ford, became a sensation, creating hits like It's Been a Long, Long Time with Bing Crosby. His distinctive licks and chording sequences inspired countless guitarists. Whether performing as country alter-ego Rhubarb Red or as jazz virtuoso Les Paul, he relentlessly pursued his vision, forever changing how music was made and heard, right up until his death in 2009.
