James Batcheller Sumner (November 19, 1887 – August 12, 1955) was an American biochemist. He made the revolutionary discovery that enzymes can be crystallized and was the first to prove they are proteins. This work earned him a shared Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1946, fundamentally advancing our understanding of biological processes.
