챕터 1 · 1848· 3장 중 1장

Forging an Anti-Slavery Coalition

Wilson’s political journey began as a Whig, but his conscience soon led him away from any party willing to compromise on slavery. He became a central figure in forming the Free Soil Party in 1848, a bold step that marked him as a committed abolitionist. His genius lay in his ability to build bridges, tirelessly uniting disparate groups—from anti-slavery Democrats to Conscience Whigs and even elements of the Know Nothings—into a powerful coalition. This tireless effort laid much of the groundwork for the nascent Republican Party, which he helped found, and which took up the anti-slavery mantle he had so carefully constructed.

A Voice in the Senate

Elected to the U.S. Senate in 1855, Wilson quickly became a leading “Radical Republican.” In his first Senate speech, he unequivocally called for the abolition of slavery in Washington, D.C., and the repeal of the Fugitive Slave Act. His commitment was not without personal risk. After Senator Charles Sumner was brutally assaulted on the Senate floor in 1856, Wilson, aiding his injured colleague, condemned the attack as “brutal, murderous, and cowardly,” refusing a duel challenge and vowing to continue his duties undeterred. During the Civil War, his military experience as a militia general and a regiment commander proved invaluable. He chaired Senate military committees, guiding legislation that outlawed slavery in the capital and bravely incorporated African Americans into the Union war effort in 1862.

챕터 3 · 1872· 3장 중 3장

Legacy of Principle

After the war, Wilson championed Radical Reconstruction, ensuring the rights of newly freed slaves. In 1872, he was elected Vice President alongside Ulysses S. Grant. Though a debilitating stroke soon limited his effectiveness, he continued to serve until his death in 1875, succumbing to a fatal stroke while working in the United States Capitol. George Frisbie Hoar, a contemporary, considered Wilson the most skilled political organizer in the country. He may have faced a late-career shadow from the Crédit Mobilier scandal, but the core of Henry Wilson’s life remained his unyielding commitment to justice. He was a man who, from his earliest days, chose the difficult path of advocating for the unpopular, driven by the profound conviction that freedom was the right of all.
