John Warner Backus (December 3, 1924 – March 17, 2007) was an American computer scientist from Philadelphia. He led the team that created FORTRAN, the first widely used high-level programming language, and invented the Backus–Naur form (BNF). His contributions fundamentally shaped how humans interact with computers and define programming languages.
