Samantha Reed Smith (June 29, 1972 – August 25, 1985) was an American peace activist and child actress from Manchester, Maine. At 10, she famously wrote a letter to Soviet leader Yuri Andropov during the Cold War, leading to an invitation to visit the Soviet Union as a goodwill ambassador. Her earnest plea for peace captivated the world.
