Rómulo Gallegos (August 2, 1884 – April 5, 1969) was a Venezuelan novelist and politician. He made history in 1948 as Venezuela's first freely elected president, though he was removed by a military coup after nine months. His literary works, especially "Doña Bárbara," profoundly influenced Latin American literature.
