Joseph Priestley (March 24, 1733 – February 6, 1804) was an English chemist, theologian, and political theorist. He is credited with the independent discovery of oxygen and the invention of carbonated water. Priestley also championed liberal political thought and religious freedom, which ultimately led to his exile to the United States.
