A Deep Connection to the Iroquois

Morgan’s fascination wasn’t merely academic. He felt a spiritual kinship with the Iroquois, declaring, "We are now upon the very soil over which they exercised dominion... Poetry still lingers around the scenery." He believed this new confederacy could write a "native American epic that would define national identity." This deep interest soon led to a real-world encounter that would shape his life.

Advocacy and Adoption

While practicing law in Albany, Morgan met Jimmy Johnson, a chief officer of the Iroquois Confederacy, and his grandson, Ely Parker, an interpreter. This chance meeting in a bookstore blossomed into friendship and a profound collaboration. Morgan learned directly from the Seneca, using their organizational notes to remodel his own society, but more importantly, he became an ardent advocate for their rights.

The Ogden Land Company, through fraudulent means, sought to evict the Seneca from their Tonawanda Reservation. Morgan and his New Confederacy stepped in, launching a public campaign of mass meetings and petitions to Congress. He even journeyed to Washington to lobby congressmen directly. In 1847, after years of struggle, the previous treaty was thrown out, and the Seneca were able to buy back their land, creating the Tonawanda Reservation. In recognition of his tireless efforts, Morgan was adopted into the Hawk Clan of the Seneca Tribe and named Tayadaowuhkuh, meaning "bridging the gap" between their people and European Americans.

Pioneer of Kinship Studies

Morgan summarized his early investigations of Iroquois customs in his first notable book, League of the Iroquois, published in 1851. It was a founding work of ethnology, comparing systems of kinship. This same year, he married his cross-cousin, Mary Elizabeth Steele, to whom he dedicated an ornate copy of his new book.

Later, in works like Ancient Society, Lewis H. Morgan advanced his theories of social evolution, proposing the then-radical concept that the earliest human domestic institution was the matrilineal clan, not the patriarchal family. His pioneering work on kinship and social structure deeply influenced diverse scholars such as Karl Marx, Charles Darwin, and Sigmund Freud, making him a unique figure cited across such varied disciplines.

Beyond his academic pursuits, Morgan, who was born on November 21, 1818, was a railroad lawyer, a New York State Assemblyman, and a State Senator. He also dedicated his energy to education, serving as a founding trustee of Wells College. He and Mary would later leave their estate to the University of Rochester to establish a women's college, a testament to his belief that equality of the sexes is a mark of advanced civilization. Morgan, who died on December 17, 1881, left a legacy of deep inquiry into human society and a lasting commitment to justice.
