Zora Neale Hurston (January 7, 1891 – January 28, 1960) was an American writer, anthropologist, and folklorist. She was a central figure of the Harlem Renaissance, known for her vibrant portrayals of Black life in the American South and Caribbean. Her seminal novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, and her ethnographic work, Mules and Men, preserved invaluable cultural narratives.
