Gerard Peter Kuiper (December 7, 1905 – December 24, 1973) was a Netherlands-born American astronomer and planetary scientist. He is considered the father of modern planetary science and speculated about the vast region now known as the Kuiper belt. His discoveries included moons of Uranus and Neptune and atmospheres of Mars and Titan.
