New York's Steadfast Governor

In 1777, with the Revolution in full swing, George Clinton was elected New York’s first governor, a post he would hold for an astonishing 21 years in total. It was a wartime governorship, and he remained a general in the Continental Army. He personally commanded forces at Fort Clinton and Fort Montgomery, fortifying the Hudson River with two forts and a giant chain to block British ships. His leadership was hands-on.

Clinton was a pragmatist, known for his vigorous opposition to Tories. He famously seized and sold Tory estates to keep down taxes for other citizens. A loyal friend to George Washington, he ensured critical food supplies reached the troops at Valley Forge. Later, he rode with Washington to his first inauguration, a tribute to their shared struggle and respect.

Champion of State Rights and the Bill of Rights

After the war, Clinton initially supported a stronger federal government, but later became a staunch Anti-Federalist. He worried about the power shifting away from the states, particularly his home state of New York. He firmly opposed the ratification of the United States Constitution, fearing it would diminish New York’s revenue and autonomy. His efforts were not in vain; he campaigned fiercely for amendments to protect individual liberties and state powers. Three years after the Constitution's ratification, the Bill of Rights became law, a direct reflection of arguments he had championed.

His influence was so profound that historian Herbert Storing identified him as "Cato," the pseudonymous author of powerful Anti-Federalist essays, though the authorship remains debated. He even stood against Vermont's admission to the Union for years due to land claim disputes, showing his unwavering commitment to New York’s interests, even if it meant challenging Congress.

Serving the Young Republic

After a brief retirement from the governorship in 1795, the call of public service was too strong to resist. He returned as governor in 1801, then ascended to the nation's fourth vice presidency in 1805, serving under Thomas Jefferson. Four years later, he continued in the role under James Madison. He became the first vice president to serve two consecutive presidents, a testament to his enduring presence in the young republic's leadership.

George Clinton passed away on April 20, 1812, in Washington, D.C., becoming the first vice president to die in office. He was a foundational figure, a man whose principles shaped the very fabric of New York and whose tireless dedication helped define the early American experiment.
