From River Pilot to Storyteller
Life on the river, however, ended with the Civil War. Twain then ventured west to Nevada, where he tried his hand at mining, a venture he humorously called a failure. He found his true calling, instead, in journalism. At the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise, he began signing his humorous travel accounts with “Mark Twain.”
His big break arrived in 1865 with “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.” This tall tale, rooted in a story he overheard while prospecting, brought him international notice. It showed the world his unique blend of keen observation and uproarious wit.

A Man of Wit and Principle
Twain's satire wasn't just for laughs; it was often wielded as a sharp tool for social commentary. His literary masterpieces, *The Adventures of Tom Sawyer* and *Adventures of Huckleberry Finn*, painted unforgettable pictures of boyhood while subtly critiquing the society of his time. *Huckleberry Finn*, in particular, explored the deep moral complexities of slavery in America. He moved his family to Hartford, Connecticut, in 1873, living next door to Harriet Beecher Stowe, a friend and fellow abolitionist. It was here, and during summers at Quarry Farm, that he penned many of his most enduring works.
Beyond his novels, Twain was a captivating public speaker, his lectures drawing crowds eager for his insights. He befriended presidents and royalty, but never lost his critical eye. Later in life, he became a staunch anti-imperialist, speaking out against American colonialism and penning "King Leopold's Soliloquy" in 1905, a fierce condemnation of atrocities in the Congo Free State. He experienced considerable financial ups and downs, losing a fortune in failed investments like the Paige Compositor, a complex mechanical typesetter. With help from Standard Oil executive Henry Huttleston Rogers, he eventually paid all his creditors in full, a point of honor despite his bankruptcy.

Innovations and Predictions
He was not only a wordsmith but an inventor, holding patents for items like a self-pasting scrapbook, which sold over 25,000 units. He also fostered a close friendship with Nikola Tesla, spending time in his laboratory, a testament to his enduring fascination with science and technology. In *Pudd'nhead Wilson*, he even championed fingerprinting as a forensic technique, years ahead of its widespread adoption. Mark Twain left us a singular body of work, a rich portrait of American life, and the memory of a quick wit that kept its edge to the very end. His autobiography, published a century after his death, continues to reveal new facets of this complex and beloved American voice.
