Rainer Weiss (September 29, 1932 – August 25, 2025) was a German-American physicist and university teacher. He is best known for inventing the laser interferometric technique essential to the LIGO detector, which enabled the first direct observation of gravitational waves. His patient, hands-on approach brought fundamental physics from conception to reality.
