He was a fixture among Boston's literary elite, counting Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow as friends. Holmes even named The Atlantic Monthly, a magazine where many of his works appeared. His writing often celebrated his native Boston, and his clever turn of phrase popularized terms like "Boston Brahmin" and even "anesthesia."
